Fire investigators said the police officer was the first to respond to the fire scene and suffered smoke inhalation while trying to get residents out of the 24-unit building.
Investigators said a resident of the apartment also suffered burn injuries.
They said both were removed to local hospitals and expected to be OK.
Investigators said the fire had broken out in a electrical room of the building then spread to other units.
He said the fire did around $500,000 in damages.
The American Red Cross is assisting residents displaced by the blaze.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
