Enjoy Oktoberfest at Wright-Patterson Club

Originating in Munich, Germany, as a celebration of the marriage of King Ludwig I, Oktoberfest has evolved into a weeks-long celebration in many parts of Germany and around the world. Celebrate this festive occasion under a lighted tent in the courtyard at the Wright-Patterson Club Sept. 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. The evening’s entertainment will feature the live sounds of authentic German band Turbo Accordions Express. A caricature artist will also be on hand to provide a sketch and preserve your family’s memory of the festivities. The Oktoberfest menu will showcase a variety of German entrees and beverages.

Celebrate National Cheeseburger Day

Join in celebrating “National Cheeseburger Day” at the Wright-Patterson Club Sept. 28 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Get a delicious cheeseburger and fries for $5 if you are a Wright Rewards member. Non-members pay $8.25 for this offer.

Military families can save during back-to-school sale

Airmen and military families at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base can save on educational essentials during a special back-to-school sidewalk sale Sept. 28-30. The event, which coincides with the Defense Commissary Agency’s Back-to-School Sidewalk Sale, will feature a host of offers, attractions and activities, including: Backpack giveaways; Military Star information and promotional giveaways; Dorm necessities on display from Home & Garden (such as small refridgerators, cookware sets, etc.).

Home School STEM Day planned at AF Museum

Home school students can explore the world's largest aviation museum and learn about aviation history and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) topics during Home School STEM Day Oct. 2 at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. During the event, home school children, ages 5-18, can participate in a number of free educational activities, many focusing on STEM themes. Celebration to honor 100th anniversary of McCook Field

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is celebrating the 100th anniversary of McCook Field on Oct. 5 at 1:30 p.m. at the old McCook Field site. The old field lies just north of downtown Dayton, along the east side of the Great Miami River next to Kettering Field. There will be a picnic starting at 11 a.m., with the Air Force Band of Flight’s Systems Go playing music. After the formal ceremony, there will be a kickball tournament along with live musical performance by Breaking 5-0-5. The celebration will commemorate McCook Field, which was established at the outbreak of World War I on Oct. 18, 1917.

Wright Brothers Day to celebrate innovation in the community

Wright State University will celebrate the innovative spirit of its namesake, the Wright brothers, at Wright Brothers Day Oct. 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union Atrium. Wright Brothers Day celebrates the 112th anniversary of Wilbur Wright’s 39-minute flight on Huffman Prairie on Oct. 5, 1905. The flight demonstrated that the Wright brothers had advanced their design to the point of a practical airplane.

Final Blue Streak Time Trial Oct. 10

The final Blue Streak Time Trial of the 2017 season will take place on Oct. 10. Riders will gather in the Area A Tennis Club parking lot with their bicycles and helmets between 5 and 5:30 p.m. Participants are asked to register and obtain numbers at the table set up in the parking lot by 5:30 p.m. Helmets are required. Bicyclists will be released at 30-second intervals to ride the 10-mile course, starting at 6 p.m. Those without base access must pre-register at least 10 days before each Blue Streak Time Trial by going to the Speedy Feet website at www.speedy-feet.com/race-entry.php?id=1472.

Annual golf outing returns to Prairie Trace

For the 11th year, the golf outing supporting the Miami Valley Combined Federal Campaign tees off Oct. 13 at Prairie Trace golf course at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The 8:30 a.m. rules briefing will be followed by a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The format is a four-person scramble, where you pick your own teams. Mixed and fun teams are encouraged at this event that raises awareness for the Miami Valley Combined Federal Campaign. Reservations are limited to the first 32 paid teams and must be made by Oct. 2. Golf and lunch cost $60, or $40 for annual golf members. Round card holders will cost $40 plus two punches, and separate lunches cost $15.
