Houses iced over after winter storm sweeps across upstate New York

Travelers going to the Mid-Atlantic and southern New England this week will face heavy snow, freezing rain and icy conditions, as the National Weather Service predicts a major winter storm will strike the region Wednesday and Thursday.

Storm predictions posted the NWS Weather Prediction Center Twitter page also show some light snow affecting southern Ohio and the Miami Valley, but the heaviest snowfalls are expected in eastern West Virginia, western Maryland, much of Pennsylvania, northwest New Jersey, eastern New York and the southern part of New England.

Snow predictions in southern Ohio call for up to an inch or less. The most-affected areas in Pennsylvania are expected to see up to 24 inches.

Freezing rain and ice are expected in North Carolina and across much of southwest and central Virginia.

The NWS predicted significant travel disruptions and power outages.
