A West Carrollton schools robotics team has qualified for the world championships for the second straight year.

Pirate Robotics Team 6032 earned an invitation to the event next month in Detroit with its showing a the Miami Valley Regional held at the Nutter Center at Wright State University earlier this month, according to the school district.

Last year, the team qualified for the world championships by competing at the Pittsburgh regional, which this year is next week. It also qualified for the world championship in 2016.

At Wright State, the team finished the qualification round with an 8-1 record and an overall ranking of fifth place overall out of 60 teams from nine states. It was the best-ever qualification finish the team has had, according to the school district.

The team was the third overall pick in the alliance team selection. Alliances are made up of three teams that compete together in a three-on-three matchup.

The team alliance swept the quarterfinals and semifinals, then won the first finals match, according to the school district.

The robot then experienced technical issues and became disabled, resulting in a second-place finish.

But because the West Carrollton team was the first pick of the runner-up alliance, it won the wild-card spot and the invitation to the world championships, according to the school district.
