Hamilton Township in Warren County, Carlisle and Germantown were area localities making the top 20 of The Safest Cities in Ohio 2017 report based on recent FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics and other research.
The report released Tuesday does not include towns with populations under 5,000 nor those failing to submit a complete crime report to the FBI. For the purposes of the report, townships with more than 5,000 are included as cities.

The top five safest cities in Ohio:
1. Russell Township, Geauga County
Twenty minutes east of downtown Cleveland, the township of 5,262 people reported just one violent crime and nine property crimes last year.

Property Crimes per 1,000: 1.71
2. Chester Twp., Geauga County
Also east of Cleveland, Chester Twp. with 10,393 residents had one violent crime and 35 property crimes during 2016.

3. Dover, Tuscawaras County
The town of 12,867 reported six violent crimes and 38 property crimes last year.

4. Bay Village, Cuyahoga County
Just 15 miles west of Cleveland, the town of 15,387 had seven violent crimes and 47 property crimes in 2016.

The town of 8,025 southwest of Sandusky had one violent crime and 31 property crimes last year.
