Cyrus, Cora
Cora Genevieve "Genny" Cyrus, born in Prichard, West Virginia, on October 22, 1943, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2024, in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the age of 81. She faced the challenges of dementia in her later years with courage and grace.
Genny was a devoted mother to her two sons, Greg (Chie) Cyrus and Jeff (Jenny) Cyrus, and a proud grandmother to Jake, Ben, Kevin, and Leia. She is also survived by her loving sisters Karen (Wally) Ferguson and Debbie (Don) Akers, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father Clarence Bellomy, mother Ruby (Davis) Bellomy, brother Roger Bellomy, and sister Mildred Smith.
A graduate of Fort Gay High School in Fort Gay, West Virginia, Genny was a majorette in the marching band and completed her studies in 1961. In 1965, she married George Cyrus in Prichard, West Virginia. The couple moved to Fairborn, Ohio, in 1967. Genny was a dedicated homemaker during her sons' early years and "mom" to all the boys' friends through junior high and high school. She created a warm and welcoming home filled with sweet tea, chocolate chip cookies, and home cooked meals for anyone around at dinner time.
Genny worked for over 20 years with the Fairborn School System before retiring. She lived an active life filled with joy and movement-playing tennis, pickleball, volleyball at the local senior center, teaching aerobics, and square dancing. After retirement, she embraced her love of travel, exploring destinations across the United States, the Caribbean, Central America, and Europe.
Her kindness and vibrant spirit left an indelible mark on all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those who loved her as they celebrate a life well-lived.
Funeral services will be held at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1911 Route 75 Kenova, WV 25530 on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at 1 p.m., followed by burial at Bean Cemetery in Prichard, West Virginia. Afterward, the family will welcome friends and relatives back to Ebenezer Baptist Church for a gathering. A Celebration of Life will take place at Rona Community Church, 1082 Rona Parkway Drive, Fairborn, OH 45324 on Tuesday, January 14 from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Genny's name to dementia research at www.alz.org.
