Garst, Mabel Virginia

Mabel Virginia Garst passed peacefully in her sleep at the age 104 on August 22, 2024. Mabel was born to John Marshall and Effie Click Garst on February 16, 1920, in Piqua, Ohio. Mabel grew up on the family farm and attended Covington, Ohio schools, graduating in 1938. She graduated from Manchester College (now Manchester University) in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She later earned her Master of Arts degree in Home Economics from The Ohio State University. Mabel taught for 31 years, the last 25 as a home economics teacher at Eaton High School in Eaton, Ohio. Mabel enjoyed traveling and visited every state in the union except Hawaii. Her hobbies included reading, gardening, and a variety of handicrafts. Mabel was a member of the Eaton Church of the Brethren (now Eaton Community Church), where she taught Sunday School, helped prepare and serve meals and served on numerous committees. She was a member of the Preble County Retired Teachers Association, the Ohio Education Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma. Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Raymond, sister-in-law Miriam, niece Vivian Young and life-long friend and roommate Phyllis Turner. She is survived by three nieces and their families: Marsha Jensen of Boalsburg, PA, Beth Kinsel and husband John of Beavercreek, OH and Virginia Vance and husband Peter of Bellbrook, OH. Mabel was beloved by all who knew her and she will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a future date.
