Gilbert, George
age 91, passed away in Oxford, Ohio on the morning of January 6, surrounded by his loving family. George is remembered by his family and friends as loving, faithful to God, and the hardest working man they've ever known. He was an innovative businessman who was well respected and known to invest in his community and church. Above all, he placed his family first and was always present and supportive of his entire family. George was born on December 15, 1933, in Spurlock, KY to Margaret Gilbert Davidson and Felix Davidson, and was raised by his maternal grandparents, William and Martha Gilbert on their homestead near the Red Bird River. He attended Langdon School throughout his childhood and was a graduate of Miami University. He was a lifelong member of Oxford Church of God, Oxford Masonic Lodge, and a member of the Ohio Insurance Agents Association for more than 20 years. In 1953 George enlisted in the United States Navy stationed in Norma, OK; Panama Canal Zone, Bermuda, and Millington, TN. After 8 years of active duty, he served 17 years in the Navy Reserves, retiring in 1978 with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. During his time in the Navy, he also obtained his Barber's License serving the military in Tennessee. George moved to Ohio with his family in 1961, settling first in Reily, and then in Oxford, Ohio where he lived and worked for 63 years. Initially, he owned and operated two barber shops. In 1963, State Farm Insurance Company recruited him to establish a new agency serving the Oxford community and beyond. He owned and operated the Oxford Singer Sewing Center from 1965-1973 and was the owner of several investment properties. George retired from State Farm Insurance Company in the year 2000. After a brief time of retirement, he established George Gilbert Insurance Company as an independent agent serving the local community until his final retirement in August of 2024 at the age of 90. George is survived by his wife, Cynthia Meyers Sizemore Gilbert, with whom he shared nearly 16 years of marriage. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Roberts Gilbert, with whom he was married for 53 years and raised four children together. He is also survived by his children, Sandra Gilbert, Dan Gilbert (Becky), Karen Montgomery (Bob), Tim Gilbert, and Jennifer Sizemore. He leaves behind nine grandchildren: James Johnston, Steven Johnston (Melissa), Cassie Lechien (Derrick), Lydia Johnson (Dan), Christine Wilson (Doug), Robby Montgomery (Courtney), Sarah Gilbert (Jay Rausch), Amanda Gilbert (Alex Rosentreter) and Mia Gilbert. Fifteen great-grandchildren: Kylee Johnston, Trinity Johnston, Paige Johnston, Draven Shough, Amir Gilbert, Braedon Lechien, Sophia Lechien, Charlotte Lechien, Hadley Lechien, Rigby Johnson, Ruger Johnson, Kendall Wilson, Reese Wilson, Evelyn Montgomery, and Henry George Montgomery. He leaves behind his siblings: William Dezarn and Brenda Robinson. He also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He is preceded in death by his grandparents William and Martha Gilbert, parents Margaret Gilbert Cornett, Felix Davidson, his son Justin Sizemore, grandson Michael Willis, siblings Troy Davidson, Eula Barron, Elbert Davidson, Martha Curro, Geneva Webb, David Cornett, Chris Cornett, Jr., TJ Cornett, Esther Burns, Aaron Cornett, Juanita Grau, and Irene Sizemore.
