Lewis, Elizabeth Darlene
(Elizabeth) Darlene Lewis at the age of 93, was called home in Poway, CA. She leaves behind the cherished memory of her beloved husband, William (Bill) Lewis, who passed much too soon, on March 15, 2009, and most recently, her sister and friend, Barbara Bailey, in September 2022.
Her story with Bill began during his service in the Korean War, writing letters to him while he served bravely in the 1st Cavalry Division on the front lines. His valor earned him numerous accolades, including three Bronze Campaign Stars, a U.N. Service Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation, a Republic of Korea Citation, and a Korean Service Medal. They were married July 12, 1952.
Together, Darlene, Bill, and their only child, Jane, shared countless joyful family moments, from boating on Lake Cumberland to exploring the Smoky Mountains. Their couple adventures included visits to sisters in Florida and many delightful trips with Pete and Barbara Bailey.
Born on October 31, 1931, in Hamilton, OH, Darlene was one of nine children of Florence and Elias Willis, owners of Willis Grocery on Parkamo Avenue. She was a devoted mother to Jane, and skillfully managed numerous rental properties that she and Bill built in Hamilton, while Bill worked as a Foreman at Champion International Paper.
Darlene's legacy continues through her daughter, Jane Kennedy (Tim) of Poway, CA, and her brother, Darrel Willis of Hamilton, OH. She leaves behind two cherished grandchildren, Jamie Mergliano (Anthony) of NJ and Jim George (Mara) of CA, along with four beloved great-grandchildren; Paul, Alexa, Joseph, and Antonio James (AJ). Additionally, she is survived by Tim's three children, Megan, Tim, and Chelsea Kennedy.
Darlene's life was a celebration of the love and joy she found in her family. Those fortunate enough to know her will remember her for her amazing wit, lively personality, and the joy and love she brought to everyone she met. During the last 10 years in California, she enjoyed every day with Jane and Tim at their home, visits and FaceTime with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, scrolling Facebook to keep up with family and friends, listening to Elvis Presley music, and cheering for the Bengals. She will be remembered and cherished always. Visitation for Darlene will be from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM on Saturday January 4, 2025 at THE WEBSTER FUNERAL HOME 3080 Homeward Way at Rt. 4, Fairfield. Following the visitation those who wish may follow the funeral procession to Greenwood Cemetery in Hamilton for a service at the Mausoleum. www.websterfuneralhomes.com
