SAPP, Elza
At the age of 97 passed away on January 18, 2025. He was born on October 14, 1927 in Murray City, Ohio, son of Elza (Sr.) and Cora Alice Decker Sapp. He attended public elementary and secondary schools, and graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in August, 1952, and a Masters degree in School Administration, in August, 1955. In October, 1948, he married Delores Maxine Carter with whom he shared 75 wonderful years of marriage. He loved spending time with his family and is survived by his two children; Edward (Monica Motzer), and Tracey (Greg Abrams), two grandchildren, Ashton (John) Grathwohl and Austin (Maggie) Sapp, Great Grandsons, Graham and Carter Grathwohl, and bonus grandchildren; Joshua (Emily) Abrams and Lora Abrams. He served with the Army 38th Regimental Combat Team 1946-1948, and as an Officer in Army Quartermaster from 1952-1954. He was employed by the Hamiton City School District in August of 1955 and served the community continuously until retirement on September 1, 1988. During his career he served as Teacher, Principal, Director of Elementary Education, and Assistant Superintendent for Personnel. During his active years of employment, he served the community as a member of Human Relations Commission, Booker T. Washington Community Center Board, United Community Services Board, Hamilton Labor Council, Goodwill Industries Board, and participated in fund raising drives for Y.M.C.A., United Appeals, Fort Hamilton Hospital, Cancer Society, and Safety Council. In retirement, he was active in Butler County Retired Teachers Association, and was a Commissioner for the Hamiton Civil Service Commission. His hobbies were reading, travel, and woodworking. The family would like to thank the care teams at Kettering Hospital in Hamilton and Kettering Main Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home, 980 N. W. Washington Blvd., Hamilton, Ohio, 45013 with Pastor Kris Theobald officiating. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service at 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery on Monday, January 27, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. with full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the following charities: Animal Friends Humane Society, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, or a charity of your choice.
