A-10 advising athletes to choose ‘forearm bumps’ over handshakes because of potential spread of Coronavirus

Fans at UD Arena this weekend for the Atlantic 10 Conference women’s basketball tournament or at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., next week for the men’s tournament may notice something different after games.

The conference is advising athletes to go with “forearm bumps” instead of post-game handshakes. The announcement came Tuesday and is a response to the “potential spread of the coronavirus.”

The NBA made a similar decision this week, asking players to choose fist bumps over handshakes.

According to an A-10 press release, “The league is in communication with its member institutions, medical personnel, competition venues and media partners. The A-10 will continue to update its members throughout championship season and reminds student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans to be diligent in following the recommended health and safety precautions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.”

The conference will have sanitizing gel on hand for athletes and also “appropriate security to limit access by non-essential personnel.”

The Dayton Flyers women’s basketball team will open the A-10 tournament Friday as the No. 1 seed, playing No. 8 seed George Washington (14-15, 8-8) or No. 9 seed Richmond (14-16, 7-9) in the quarterfinals at 11 a.m. at UD Arena.

The Dayton men’s team will open the A-10 tournament as the No. 1 seed at noon on March 13 in Brooklyn.
