Dayton honors its seniors at the last home game on Saturday, March 7, 2020, at UD Arena.

Dayton Flyers coach Anthony Grant was interviewed on Fox Sports Radio on Saturday and commented on the idea being thrown around of giving an extra year of eligibility to seniors affected by the cancellation of the NCAA tournament this season.

The NCAA already announced it would grant “eligibility relief” for student-athletes involved in spring sports, though details will be released at a later time. According to reports, the NCAA will also discuss what to do with student-athletes involved in winter sports, such as basketball and wrestling.

Dayton had two seniors, Trey Landers and Ryan Mikesell, who exhausted their eligibility this season.

“I heard that,” Grant said, “and it’d be interesting to see how that plays out. We played (31) games. Other teams may have played more or a little less. The NCAA’s got a dilemma in how they want to handle not only restoring eligibility for seniors but also in the situation where you may have more than 13 guys on scholarship because of the guys you signed in the early signing period. There’s a lot of things that have to be taken into consideration. I feel bad for these spring sports — softball, baseball and track and field — that never got to start their seasons.”

Mikesell spent five seasons at UD, sitting out his third year after undergoing two hip surgeries. Landers played four seasons, though his freshman season was about as close to a redshirt season as you can get. He played a total of 52 minutes in nine games.

Roderick Caldwell, a teammate of Landers at Wayne and was a senior this season at Ashland University, wrote on Twitter, “If they (are) giving years of eligibility back, they might as well sign me up! I need mine!”

Landers shared Caldwell’s Tweet and wrote, “Facts!”

ESPN analyst Dick Vitale echoed those thoughts, writing on Twitter: “What about the NCAA giving the seniors an extra (year) of eligibility? If graduated they can work towards a Masters. Heart hurts for those seniors that wanted that ONE SHINING MOMENT.”
