Dayton Flyers coach Anthony Grant provided an update on forward Obi Toppin on Monday, two days after he suffered a sprained left ankle in the second half of an 88-60 victory against Massachusetts.

No. 13 Dayton plays Virginia Commonwealth at 8 p.m. Tuesday in a key Atlantic 10 Conference game.

In a text message, Grant wrote, “We hope to have him available. (He’s) responding well to treatment. The next 24 hours will determine the best course.”

When asked about the injury after the game Saturday, Toppin said, “It’s good.” He wore a protective boot after returning to the bench in the final minutes of the game.

Toppin suffered the injury with 15 minutes, 12 seconds remaining in the second half. He had 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting at that point, and Dayton led 56-31. Toppin stepped on another player’s foot as he was getting back down the court on offense and fell near midcourt.
