Bengals cut veteran defensive tackle, pair of rookies

The Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday parted ways with the first of what could a handful of veterans over the next few weeks with the termination of defensive tackle Brandon Thompson’s contract.

A third-round pick out of Clemson in 2013, Thompson appeared in 39 games with seven starts. He missed all of 2016 after tearing his ACL in the 2015 season finale.

The Bengals have drafted defensive tackles in each of the last two drafts, taking Andrew Billings in the fourth round in 2016 and Ryan Glasgow in the fourth round this year, making Thompson expendable.

Thompson played just 11 snaps Saturday night in the 30-12 loss to the Chiefs , while Glasgow logged 29 and Billings 11.

The team also waived a pair of undrafted rookies in wide receiver Karel Hamilton and running back Boom Williams.

Head coach Marvin Lewis said when training camp began that he didn’t plan on waiting until Sept. 2 to start trimming the roster from 90 to 53. Sunday’s moves in addition to the release of safety Cedric Thompson on Saturday leaves the team with 86 players.
