Matt Burgbacher has resigned as the Troy High School head football coach to become the head coach at Tippecanoe.

A former Reds Devils assistant under his father, longtime Tipp head coach Charlie Burgbacher, Matt’s hiring was announced on Tuesday pending school board approval later this month. He succeeds Joel Derge, who was promoted to Tipp’s head coach after Charlie Burgbacher resigned after 26 seasons to join Troy’s staff.

Matt Burgbacher is a Tipp grad, played for his father there and began his coaching career at Tipp City. His first head coach position was at Fort Loramie, then at Troy.

“This position was very intriguing to me because Tipp City has meant so much to me and my family,” Matt Burgbacher said in a release. “Being an alumni and having the opportunity to lead the same program my dad did for 26 years is very special to me.”

Burgbacher was Troy’s head coach the last four seasons and was named the Greater Western Ohio Conference American North coach of the year the last three years. Those three Trojans teams advanced to the Division II playoffs and the 2018 and ’16 teams were both 10-2.

Tipp is one of 10 current GWOC teams that will leave and form a revised Miami Valley League beginning next fall.

Tipp was 5-5 last season and missed the postseason for the second straight year after a run of 12 consecutive playoff appearances from 2005-16. Derge cited family commitments for his resignation.
