Carroll grad Goecke third midway through Ohio Amateur Championship

Luke Campbell of Whitehouse fired a 3-under-par 68 Wednesday to take the lead midway through the 113th Ohio Amateur Championship at Moraine Country Club.

Campbell is at 5-under 137 through 36 holes.

Andrew Bailey of Cleveland matched Campbell’s 68 and is two shots back in second.

Carroll grad Tyler Goecke of Xenia fired his second straight round of 70 is in third place at 2 under. Goecke will begin his college career this fall at Wright State University.

Three players — first-round leader Maxwell Moldovan, Peter Samborsky of Centerville and two-time Ohio Am champ Robert Gerwin II — are four shots back.

Four players, including Cameron Willis of Eaton and Kyle Schmidt of Liberty Twp., are at even par. Willis, who plays at Wittenberg, shot a second straight 71. Schmidt, a recent Lakota East grad who will play at Dayton, fired a bogey-free 66, the low round of the day.

Findlay’s Tyler Riley and Clay Amlung of Cincinnati are also at even par.

Sixty players in the field of 144 made the 36-hole cut. The field will be cut again after Thursday’s third round.

The final round is Friday.
