Carroll High School senior Jack Agnew will race for his second state championship Saturday at the Division II state cross country meet. He won the race last season in 15 minutes, 31 seconds, leading his team to a seventh-place finish.

“Winning it once, that’s plenty for me,” said his dad John Agnew, the longtime Carroll boys and girls coach. “(Winning it twice), that’s a difficult thing to do. A lot of things have got to go your way, and obviously you’ve got to do everything right. Last year was was awesome. This year, I think that pressure is a little less because he’s already won it once. Nobody’s going to take that away. Obviously, he’d like to win it again, but he’s mainly trying to score as low as he can for the team.”

The Carroll boys won a Division II regional championship last weekend in Troy. Agnew won the race in 16:06, and his teammate, junior Logan Arnold, finished second in 16:14.

The Carroll girls placed second in Troy with sophomore Ruby Gross placing fourth in 19:34 and freshman Anna Thurman placing eighth in 19:49.

“That was a pleasant surprise,” Agnew said. “They kind of shocked everybody because we were fourth at districts and we were hoping to squeeze into one of the four spots, and they ended up really running well.”

This is the 18th time the boys team has qualified for state and the seventh time the girls team has qualified.

The Division II boys race starts at 1 p.m. Saturday. The girls race follows at 1:45. All the state championship races will take place at Fortress Obetz and Memorial Park in Obetz on the south side of Columbus.
