In a press release, Edwards called Lewis “one of the most respected minds in our game,” while Lewis said he expects to be another set of eyes and ears for Edwards, who is also a former NFL head coach.
“I've known Herman for almost 30 years and the opportunity to come and assist him and his coaches win football games is very exciting and appealing," Lewis said. "Arizona State and Tempe have always been special to me.”
Edwards was a surprise hire to head the Sun Devils last season after nine years as an analyst for ESPN. Prior to that he was head coach of the Jets and Chiefs.
ASU went 7-6 in his first season in Tempe.

Lewis set Bengals records for coaching wins (131), longest tenure (16 seasons), playoff appearances (seven) and division titles (four) but parted ways with the organization in December after a third straight losing season and the team’s first last-place finish in the AFC North since 2010.
"Marvin Lewis is one of the most respected minds in our game," Edwards said in a statement. "Whether as the winningest coach in the franchise history of the Cincinnati Bengals, or the architect of one the greatest defenses in NFL history, the 2000 Baltimore Ravens, Marvin has succeeded everywhere he has been and he has done it the right way. His passion for teaching will be an incredible benefit not only for our coaches, but also for the young men we are responsible for as students and athletes.”
