He is averaging 9.3 points and 2.1 rebounds in 13 games this season and has scored in double figures eight times, including four of the last five for the Mountaineers.
Two other former Elks who were part of the program’s recent run of state tournament appearances are also contributing at the Division I level this year.
Tom House, a 6-7 junior guard at Furman, is averaging 6.8 points and 2.1 rebounds in 15 games, including two starts. That includes three double-figure scoring games (21 points against Columbia International, 13 against Jacksonville and 19 against Montreat).
Rich Rolf, who is also a 6-7 guard, has started seven of 15 games at Charlotte and is averaging 5.8 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.
While those three carve out roles this season, their point guard is dealing with a health-related setback at Indiana.
A point guard who was named Ohio’s Mr. Basketball in 2022, Gabe Cupps is out following surgery for a lower body injury that has limited him to four games this season.
He started 22 of 33 games played in last season and averaged 2.6 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists as a true freshman.
Even with Cupps sidelined, there is a former Elk making an impact on Big Ten basketball.
Cotie McMahon is in her third season as a starter at Ohio State, where the women’s basketball Buckeyes are 14-0 this season and ranked 10th in the most recent Associated Press poll.
McMahon, a 6-foot junior forward, is Ohio State’s leading scorer at 17.8 points per game. She is shooting 44% from the field and adding 4.6 rebounds per game.
McMahon scored 16 points Sunday as the Buckeyes beat Northwestern 92-62.
She was an honorable mention All-American last season and a finalist for the Cheryl Miller Award, which goes to the top forward in the country.
