Dayton awards walk-on Wehrli a scholarship

Dayton men’s basketball fans have wondered for weeks whether the university would or could give walk-on Bobby Wehrli a scholarship now that’s playing a bigger role.

They got their answer Friday when the 6-foot-6 junior forward Wehrli, of Naperville, Ill., posted a photo to Twitter of his financial aid agreement and wrote, “Got a little surprise from @DaytonTrueTeam this morning #Blessed #Official.”

His teammates were just as thrilled.

“Hard work pays off,” Dyshawn Pierre wrote on Twitter.

Charles Cooke, a transfer from James Madison sitting out this season, also congratulated Wehrli.

“Nothing but positive vibes over here,” Cooke wrote.

Wehrli is averaging 2.6 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. He played in two of the first nine games. When Dayton dismissed its only two big men from the team in December, his role increased. He’s played double-figure minutes in each of the seven games since, and the Flyers are 7-0 in that stretch.
