“As crazy as it sounds, he probably has improved as much as any guy around here, if you really start to think about when you first met him and where he is right now,” Miller said.
Wehrli has two years of eligibility remaining because he did not see any action as a freshman in 2012-13.
The Flyers had one open scholarship even before they lost senior Dyshawn Pierre, who will miss at least the first 10 games. Pierre, who was accused by another student of sexual assault in May but did not face criminal charges, remains not enrolled in school. No one at UD has confirmed the report he will return to the team in December after the first semester ends.
Toward the end of last season, Miller didn’t know if Wehrli would get a scholarship. It depended on the scholarship situation. The Flyers did not fill the scholarship with a transfer or another freshman.
There was never any doubt Wehrli deserved one based on his performance last season. Miller said he doesn’t look at Wehrli any differently than any scholarship player.
“Bobby’s experience level from a year ago makes him part of our core group of returners,” Miller said. “Can he helps us win games? We already know that.”
The Flyers begin practice for the new season on Friday.
