La Salle upsets Dayton; Davidson wins A-10 title outright

A fairytale ending to the regular season eluded the Dayton Flyers on Saturday.

La Salle handed Dayton a 55-53 loss at Tom Gola Arena. The Flyers (23-7, 13-5) needed a Davidson loss on Saturday night to win a share of the Atlantic 10 title, but Davidson routed Duquesne 107-78 to win the title outright.

Dayton gets the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament and will play in the quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. They will play No. 7 St. Bonaventure or No. 10 seed St. Joseph’s. Those teams play at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Dayton beat the Bonnies twice this season and were 1-0 against the Hawks with a victory at UD Arena.

The Dayton-La Salle game was tied at 39-39, but the Explorers took control with a 7-0 run from the 6:09 mark to the 3:44 mark in the second half. Dayton cut the deficit to two points with 2:01 to play and then again with 55 seconds left.

Both times La Salle’s Jordan Price scored to extend the Explorers’ lead back to four points.

Scoochie Smith hit a 3-pointer for Dayton at the buzzer to leave the Flyers with a two-point loss.

Jordan Sibert led Dayton with 17 points. Kendall Pollard scored 14.

Price scored 21 for La Salle.

The Flyers were out-rebounded 40-27 and committed 14 turnovers after having 16 combined in their two previous games.
