Former UD basketball standout dies

Pete Boyle, a standout on the first University of Dayton basketball team to play in the NIT, died Saturday night, Aug. 14, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

A rugged forward from Floral Park, N.Y., Boyle was a three-year starter, helping the Flyers to runner-up finishes in the NIT in 1951 and ’52. UD also played in the NCAA tournament in ’52.

“He was a class act,” said Don “Monk” Meineke, an All-American on those early UD teams. “He was a great passer and rebounder and was always ready to play.

“He’s better off now. He was struggling and there was no recovery from that (disease). He was a good guy and good friend.”

Boyle is survived by his wife Margaret (Toey) and five children. Funeral arrangements are pending.
