WATCH: Dayton beats Richmond on dunk in final seconds

Flyers bounce back from loss to La Salle and secure top-four seed in A-10 tournament

RICHMOND, Va. — A one-handed slam by R.J. Blakney with 1.2 seconds left off an in-bounds pass from Malachi Smith gave the Dayton Flyers a 55-53 victory Tuesday against Richmond at the Robins Center.

With its ninth straight victory in the series, Dayton (21-9, 13-4) secured a top-three seed and a double bye in the Atlantic 10 tournament with one game left to play in the regular season at 12:30 p.m. Saturday against first-place Davidson. The Flyers will play in the quarterfinals on March 11 at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., and will have to win three games in three days to secure the league’s NCAA tournament bid.

After Richmond tied the game on two free throws by Tyler Burton with 18 seconds left, it used up its remaining fouls to trim Dayton’s possession time, forcing the Flyers to get one last chance with 1.2 left. Smith threw the pass from under the basket, and Blakney finished it off.

Toumani Camara scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Flyers. Blakney, Smith and Koby Brea all had 10. DaRon Holmes II had eight points and nine rebounds.

This was a close game throughout the 40 minutes. Neither team led by more than five. Dayton never trailed in the second half.

Richmond (19-11,10-7) lost its final home game and fell out of a tie for fifth place with Saint Louis (19-10, 10-6), which plays Wednesday.
