Dayton dominates second half to beat Duquesne

Watson, Crutcher combine for 37 points

The Dayton Flyers opened the second half with an 11-2 run to take the lead for good and then stretched the advantage to 18 points with a 15-1 run, coasting to a 72-63 victory Wednesday against Duquesne at UD Arena

Dayton (7-3 overall) moved above .500 in Atlantic 10 Conference play for the first time this season. Duquesne (3-4, 2-3) lost to Dayton for the sixth straight time. The teams play again Feb. 2 in Pittsburgh.

Ibi Watson and Jalen Crutcher, who combined for 53 points Friday in an overtime victory at Davidson, scored 37 in this game. Watson had 19 points, and Crutcher scored 18.

Mustapha Amzil scored 11 points. Zimi Nwokeji led the reserves with nine.

Dayton shot 41.7 percent from 3-point range (10 of 24). It’s the fifth time it has topped 40 percent this season and the third time in five A-10 games.

HALFTIME RECAP

Ryan Murphy hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Duquesne a 34-33 halftime lead.

Duquesne opened the game on a 10-2 run. Marcus Weathers scored all 10 points. He finished the half with 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting.

Duquesne led by as many as nine points, 16-7, before Dayton rallied with a 12-2 run. Crutcher scored nine of his 14 first-half points in that run.

Amzil scored nine points for Dayton. Watson had six.

Dayton shot 44 percent from the field. Duquesne shot 48 percent.

NOTES: Assistant coaches Anthony Solomon and Ricardo Greer both returned to the bench after missing the last three games for undisclosed reasons. ... Dayton freshman guard R.J. Blakney returned to action after missing the first four A-10 games with an undisclosed injury. He played two minutes in the first half.
