Dayton extends winning streak vs. Saint Louis to five games

Flyers return to action Saturday at Duquesne

The Dayton Flyers built a 16-point lead in the second half and then hung on to beat Saint Louis 68-63 on Tuesday at UD Arena. Saint Louis got as close as four points in the final minute after trailing 61-45 with 4:20 to play.

Dayton (10-6, 2-1), which lost 53-52 to Virginia Commonwealth six days earlier at UD Arena, avoided its first back-to-back home losses in the A-10 since 2016. The Flyers beat Saint Louis for the fifth straight time.

Dayton made 7 of 16 3-pointers (43.8 percent) after making 8 of 16 in an 83-58 victory at George Washington Saturday.

Malachi Smith and Kobe Elvis each scored 14 points for Dayton. Smith had eight rebounds, five assists and five turnovers. DaRon Holmes II had 11 points and five blocked shots.

Dayton committed 12 turnovers, ending a five-game streak in which it had at least 15 turnovers.

Saint Louis (10-5, 1-1) made 9 of 16 3-pointers (56.3 percent) but shot 40 percent (22 of 52), its fourth-worst mark of the season, from the field. Gibson Jimerson led the Billikens with 23 points.

Dayton plays at Duquesne (6-7, 1-0) at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

HALFTIME RECAP

The Flyers outscored Saint Louis 12-5 in the final four minutes of the first half to take a 36-26 halftime lead.

Dayton scored 10 points off turnovers in the half and made 6 of 11 3-pointers. Saint Louis scored its first nine points from 3-point range and made 5 of 7.

Elvis led Dayton with 12 points and made 5 of 9 shots, including 2 of 3 3-pointers. R.J. Blakney and Mustapha Amzil each scored six. Amzil made both of his 3-point attempts.

Dayton trailed 19-14 when it went on a 10-0 run in a four-minute stretch.
