The Dayton Flyers got to work Wednesday afternoon, practicing at Titan Gym on the campus of Cal State Fullerton in preparation for an 8:30 p.m. game Thursday against Nebraska in the first round of the Wooden Legacy.

Dayton arrived in Los Angeles on Wednesday evening — avoiding one of the worst traffic jams in L.A. history — after a direct flight from Columbus. The Flyers are staying in Anaheim, not far from Fullerton. This is the second straight year UD has stayed right down the street from a Disney park. Last year, it was Disney World in Orlando. This year, it's Disneyland.

This will be Dayton’s second game with nine scholarship players. They Flyers get three games in four days to build for the weeks ahead. The Flyers will hope to get forward Kendall Pollard back at some point, but until that happens, roles will change.

“Ryan (Mikesell) is in a pretty good mode right now as far as understanding what we’re asking him to do,” Dayton coach Archie Miller said. “He’s got to make better decisions with the ball. Xeyrius (Williams), these are his first extended amount of minutes playing out of position in many ways. As you evaluate him, he’s going to get better.”

Miller advises the players it’s about the little things.

“It’s not about scoring points,” he said. “It’s about blocking out, rebounding the ball, playing extremely hard on the defensive end, intangible offensive rebounding, not quick shooting. Those are the things we’ve got to get out of guys’ systems. We’ve got to continue to build our rotation as well. We’ve got some guys playing a lot of minutes, like Scoochie and Charles. They’re not going to be able to play that amount of minutes effectively. We have to get them out. We have to get other guys in there. We’re still developing as a team. We need guys like John (Crosby) and Darrell (Davis) and even Trey (Landers) as we keep moving forward.”
