Dayton Flyers coach Archie Miller presented late center Steve McElvene’s Atlantic 10 championship ring to his mom Jenell Shoals in a ceremony at center court at UD Arena on Friday night.

UD played a video tribute to McElvene 15 minutes before the start of the season opener against Austin Peay. The Flyers watched the tribute from the bench. McElvene’s family then walked onto the court to a standing ovation, and Miller surprised them with the ring.

Dayton’s players then surrounded the McElvene family in a group hug.

McElvene, 20, died May 12 at his family’s home in Fort Wayne, Ind., from an enlarged heart. The Flyers will wear his No. 5 on their jerseys all season.
