Dayton Flyers: A look at 2020 recruiting class

Even if UD fills that last remaining scholarship, expect the recruiting to continue because the program could lose Obi Toppin to the NBA Draft next June, and that would open up another scholarship.

Here’s a quick rundown of the three players expected to join the program next year:

Lukas Frazier

Date of commitment: June 11.

School: Lake Catholic High School in Mentor.

Position: Guard.

Height: 6-4.

Summary: Frazier, a three-star recruit, according to 247Sports.com, received an offer from Wright State in June 2018 and also had offers from Florida Gulf Coast, Northern Kentucky, Youngstown State, Ohio, Akron, Bowling Green and others.

Quote: "His freshman and sophomore years, he was our true point guard," Lake Catholic Coach Matt Moran said. "We moved him off the ball last year because we needed more scoring from him, which he absolutely did, so it just proved how versatile he can be. His upside is tremendous. He's continuing to grow. He's continuing to get stronger. He's the type of kid who just makes a coach's job easier. He makes it look like I know what I'm doing."

Koby Brea

Date of commitment: Oct. 8.

School: Monsignor Scanlan High School, Bronx, N.Y.

Position: Guard.

Height: 6-5.

Summary: Massachusetts, Manhattan, Iona and Robert Morris were among the other schools recruiting him. Scanlan assistant coach Marcus Matthews said Brea was under-recruited because of the uncertainty about what class he would end up in and also because he didn't play varsity basketball until his junior year. He averaged 18 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists per game last season.

Quote: "He's got great size," said Adam Berkowitz, who coached Brea with New Heights in the Under Armor Association. "He's a big guard. He can really score. He can really shoot it. He's still young. I think his best basketball is ahead of him. I think three years from now, he's going to be really good."

R.J. Blakney

Date of commitment: Oct. 25.

School: Loomis Chaffee School (Conn.)

Position: Guard

Height: 6-5.

Summary: Blakney graduated from St. Maria Goretti Catholic High School in Hagerstown, Md., in the spring and decided to attend a prep school for a year. As a senior, Blakney averaged 16.4 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game as a senior and led his team to 30 wins.  Dayton offered Blakney a scholarship early this month, according to Team Thrill, a team he plays for in the Under Armour Association. Georgetown offered him a scholarship around the same time.

Quote: "R.J.'s a stud," St. Maria Goretti coach Sidney McCray said. "I think he's a guy who can score form all three levels. He's something special to watch in transition, and he's a great defender, too. He can guard pretty much one through four and sometimes five depending on the matchup. A great kid, really hungry, very passionate about the game."
