One day after an exhibition game was cancelled because of a positive COVID-19 test within the Cedarville University program, the Dayton Flyers lost their first regular-season opponent.

“We were informed this morning that Alcorn State has a positive for COVID-19 during pre-competition testing at Kent State,” Dayton announced Saturday morning. “As a result, they cannot play at UD Arena on Tuesday, December 1. We are working through our contingency plans and will share scheduling updates as they develop.”

Alcorn State was the second team Dayton had scheduled for Dec. 1. Its first opponent, Bellarmine University, had to pull out of the game because of a COVID-19 situation on its campus.

Dayton will try to find another opponent for early next week. It does not have another game scheduled until Saturday when it plays Southern Methodist at UD Arena at 2 p.m.

Alcorn State opened the season Wednesday with a 90-59 loss to Alabama-Birmingham and was scheduled to play at Kent State at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The college basketball season started Wednesday. Dayton was one of five Atlantic 10 Conference teams to not play in the first three days. Virginia Commonwealth, a last-minute replacement in the Crossover Classic, the tournament in South Dakota that originally included Dayton, finished third in the event by beating Memphis on Friday.

Dayton also was one of 15 teams in the top 60 of the Ken Pomeroy rankings that did not play in the first three days. There were at least six games involving top-25 teams cancelled or postponed in the first three days of the season because of positive COVID-19 tests.

Even though Dayton had its exhibition game cancelled, it did see outside competition Wednesday. According to multiple sources, Dayton scrimmaged the Cincinnati Bearcats. The teams also scrimmaged last season. Neither scrimmage was publicized or confirmed by the programs.
