Dayton Flyers offer scholarship to forward from Georgia

Kendall Campbell, a 6-foot-7 forward from Georgia, announced a scholarship offer from the Dayton Flyers on Tuesday. He’s a four-star recruit who ranks 87th in the class of 2022, according to Rivals.com.

Campbell averaged 17.4 points and 9.8 rebounds last season as a sophomore at Meadowcreek High School in Norcross, Ga. That’s 22 miles northeast of Atlanta. He transferred to Milton High School, which is 17 miles north of Norcross in the summer.

“Campbell is versatile on both sides of the ball; he can defend multiple positions and has inside-out capabilities on offense,” wrote Trent Markwith, of On the Radar Hoops. “He made impressive strides with his offensive game this winter which boosted his stock significantly. Campbell plays with a good motor, doesn’t shy away from physicality, and keeps things simple offensively. He checks a lot of boxes and will continue to gain attention the rest of his high school career.”

Campbell announced an offer from Virginia Tech earlier this month. Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia Tech are among the other schools to offer him scholarships.

Dayton filled one scholarship in the 2021 class with the commitment of Malachi Smith in August. Assuming it doesn’t fill the one open scholarship in the 2020-21 season, it has four open for the 2021-22 season.

With Dwayne Cohill suffering a torn ACL this month, he’ll receive a medical reshirt this season and will likely finish his career in the 2022-23 season instead of 2021-22. That means Chase Johnson could be the only player Dayton loses after the 2021-22 season, though the NCAA’s decision to not count this season against anyone’s eligibility means even Johnson could play into 2023. In short, it’s too early to tell how many scholarships Dayton will have open in 2022.
