Sophomore point guard John Crosby intends to transfer from the Dayton Flyers, UD announced Monday night, and has been granted a release from his scholarship.

New Dayton coach Anthony Grant told Tom Archdeacon, of the Dayton Daily News, earlier in the day of Crosby’s decision. Grant had just heard the news himself.

Crosby averaged 2.6 points and 1.1 assists as a backup to Scoochie Smith last season. He shot 33.3 percent (62 of 186) from the field, 37.8 percent (17 of 45) from 3-point range, and 47.1 percent (24 of 51) from the line. He struggled for a majority of the season with turnovers and finishing plays at the basket but did show some improvement late in the season.

There were several other pieces of news Monday:

• Grant hopes to fill his coaching staff this week and said a former UD assistant coach could be on it.

Kevin Kuwik, an assistant under Archie Miller for the last six seasons, is also in the running. Kuwik has continued to work at UD with Grant since Miller left for Indiana.

• Grant confirmed incoming freshman center Jordan Pierce, of Scotch Plains, N.J., has decided to stay with Dayton. Guard Jordan Davis, of Irmo, S.C., had already declared his intention to stay. Grant is continuing to recruit point guard McKinley Wright, of Champlin Park, Minn.

• Another 2017 recruit, forward Matej Svoboda, of the Czech Republic, responded to an email from the Dayton Daily News on Monday and said he is still considering Dayton but had not heard from anyone at Dayton since Miller left. He said he expects to know more later this week. Svoboda verbally committed to Dayton last winter but has not signed a letter of intent.
