You don’t get any points for breaking a backboard — except on social media, where the points are immeasurable.

Jordan Pierce, one of the four members of the 2017 recruiting class for the Dayton Flyers, shattered a backboard on a dunk in practice Monday at Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains, N.J.

Dayton coach Archie Miller heard about the incident after practice Monday.

“My phone was buzzing,” he said on the Archie Miller Show on WHIO. “Usually, I pick up my phone to see what went wrong somewhere. What went wrong in New Jersey was Jordan broke a backboard today in practice. I said, ‘I hope they don’t ask his father for the money for it because he shouldn’t have to pay for Jordan’s success of breaking his first backboard.’ We’re happy with Jordan. Jordan is 6-11, 285 pounds. He’s not a skinny guy or disproportionate guy. He looks like a garbage truck in terms of how wide he is. He’s got good bounce off the floor. He can run, but he’s going to have to get used to the college speed. We’re happy about him. He has true size.

Pierce, a senior who committed to Dayton in September, had 15 points and 10 rebounds Sunday as Union Catholic beat The Hun School in the Hoop Group New Jersey Tipoff Showcase in Caldwell, N.J.

Dayton’s 2017 class also includes: 6-0 point guard McKinley Wright, of Champlin Park, Minn.; 6-4 guard Jordan Davis, of Irmo, S.C.; and 6-6 forward Nahziah Carter, of Rochester, N.Y.
