Dayton Flyers recruiting update: Latest on 2021, 2022 classes

The 2021 recruiting class will be an important one for the Dayton Flyers because they’ll lose four key contributors from the 2020-21 roster: Ibi Watson, Rodney Chatman, Jordy Tshimanga and Jalen Crutcher, assuming he withdraws from the NBA Draft and returns to UD for his final season.

Here’s the latest news on players Dayton is recruiting in the 2021 class and beyond:

Malachi Smith: A 6-foot point guard in the 2021 class from St. Raymond High School for Boys in Bronx, N.Y. Smith told 247Sports.com in May Dayton is recruiting him the hardest. He's the younger brother of former Flyer Scoochie Smith.

“I base my game off him, I try and do everything he does,” Malachi told 247Sports.com. “Pass first and be able to get a bucket at any time. He always helped me by giving advice ever since I was young. He has played a big role.”

Dayton offered Smith a scholarship last September. Rutgers, Seton Hall and Wake Forest are among the other schools recruiting him.

Malaki Branham: The 6-foot-5 guard from Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School received an offer May 5, according to Jake Weingarten, of Stockrisers.com. He's a four-star recruit who ranks 24th in the 2021 class, according to the 247Sports.com composite rankings. He has offers from Ohio State, Xavier, Louisville and many other schools.

Jalin Billingsley: A 6-foot-6 forward in the class of 2021 from Lutheran East in Cleveland, Billingsley told EndlessMotor.net he had a virtual visit with Dayton in May. Dayton offered him a scholarship last September. He said Georgetown, Virginia Tech, Cincinnati, Temple, Penn State and Dayton are recruiting him the hardest.

Rafael Castro: A 6-9 forward at Dover High School (N.J.), Castro had a Zoom call with Dayton coaches earlier this month, according to Weingarten. Dayton offered Castro a scholarship in April. Florida, Xavier and Virginia Commonwealth are among the other schools recruiting him.

Fray Nguimbi: The 6-8 forward, a native of the Congo, attends West Oaks Academy in Orlando, Fla., received an offer from Dayton on June 3, according to multiple reports. He's a member of the 2022 class. Former Dayton guard Jhery Matos played at West Oaks. Nguimbi has offers from Alabama, Iowa State and South Florida among others.
