Dayton Flyers team officially accepted into $2 million tournament

Team will play its first game July 19

A team of former Dayton Flyers got official confirmation Thursday they have been selected to participate in The Basketball Tournament, a $2 million winner-takes-all event taking place in July and August.

This will be the first team made up of all former Flyers to participate in the tournament. It’s the third year for the event.

The official Twitter account of the tournament announced the news: “They've brought together some of the best players in (Dayton basketball) history. Dozens of fans have endorsed them using the hashtag #TBTRecs. Next up? A trip to Columbus. We have officially ACCEPTED @FlyersTBT to play in #TBT2019.”

The team, nicknamed the Red Scare, was started by former Dayton walk-ons Joey Gruden and Jeremiah Bonsu. Seven players have committed to the roster: Kevin Dillard, Devin Oliver, Vee Sanford, Dyshawn Pierre, Kendall Pollard, Kyle Davis and Josh Cunningham. At least two more additions are expected.

The Red Scare will play in July at Capital University in Bexley, just east of downtown Columbus. There will be four first-round games on July 19, two semifinal games the on July 20 and the regional final on July 21. The bracket will be announced June 11. General admission tickets cost $25.
