Dayton Flyers’ rally comes up short

Dayton cuts 18-point deficit to 2 but falls by 4

The Dayton Flyers rallied from an 18-point deficit in the second half to get as close as two points in the final minutes but fell 61-57 to No. 17 Saint Mary’s on Saturday at UD Arena.

Star of the game: Charles Cooke led the Flyers with 19 points. He made 11 of 13 free throws.

Stat of the game: The Flyers were out-rebounded 38-31.

Play of the game: Xeyrius Williams came up with a steal in the final seconds on an in-bounds pass but was called for a charge driving to the basket. The Flyers trailed by two points at the time.

Injury news: Dayton forward Josh Cunningham will miss at least three months after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ligament in his ankle Friday. Dayton coach Archie Miller said after the game he doesn't think Cunningham will play again this season, and he's not sure if he will be eligible for a redshirt because he already sat out one season as a transfer.

Summary: The Flyers fall to 2-1. The Gaels are 3-0.

FIRST-HALF RECAP

Saint Mary’s proved to be every bit as big a challenge as the Dayton Flyers expected in the first half Saturday. The Gaels ended the half on a 7-0 run and led 39-26.

Star of the half: Forward Calvin Hermanson leads Saint Mary's with 13 points. He made 3 of 5 3-pointers.

Key run: The Flyers trailed 19-16 after a jump shot by Scoochie Smith at the 9:30 mark. The Gaels ran off 11 straight points in the next three minutes.

Key stat: Dayton committed eight turnovers. Saint Mary's has only three.

Dayton's star: Smith leads UD with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting.

Foul trouble: Charles Cooke and Darrell Davis each have two fouls. Kyle Clark has two fouls for Saint Mary's.
