Jack Gibbs scored 34 points, including two 3-pointers in the final minute, to lead No. 9 seed Davidson to a 73-67 upset of No. 1 seed Dayton on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 tournament at PPG Paints Arena.

Dayton rallied to take a 65-62 lead on a 3-pointer by Charles Cooke, but Davidson tied the game on its next possession. Then Gibbs put the Wildcats ahead with a 3-pointer with 51 seconds left. Gibbs hit another 3-pointer with 17 seconds left and was fouled by Dayton’s Kyle Davis on the play. He made the free throw to clinch the victory.

Dayton (24-7) will now wait until Sunday, hoping to hear its name called on the NCAA selection show. The Flyers lost their first game at the A-10 tournament for the first time in the last four seasons.

Cooke led the Flyers with 14 points. Dayton made 5 of 10 free throws. Davidson made 12 of 13.

FIRST-HALF RECAP

The Dayton Flyers overcame a 13-point deficit with eight minutes to play on Feb. 24 to beat Davidson in overtime. They’ll have to rally from a 12-point halftime deficit if they want to advance past the Wildcats in the Atlantic 10 quarterfinals.

Dayton trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half and trailed 37-25 at halftime Friday at PPG Paints Arena.

UD's star: Kendall Pollard scored six points to lead Dayton. He shot 3 of 8 from the field.

Davidson's star: Jack Gibbs made 6 of 10 shots from the field and scored 17 points.

Key stat: Davidson shot 50 percent from the field. Dayton shot 32.1 percent.

Big run: Pollard opened the game with a basket to give UD a 2-0 lead. Davidson scored the next points and led the rest of the half.

Summary: Dayton's defensive problems in its regular-season finale at George Washington carried over to this game, and the Flyers have missed several point-blank shots at the rim.
