Dayton Flyers women beat Fordham to stay in first place in A-10

The Dayton Flyers women’s basketball team won its ninth straight game, beating Fordham 48-44 at UD Arena on Sunday.

The victory moved Dayton (14-7, 7-0) into first place by itself in the Atlantic 10 Conference. It leads Virginia Commonwealth (11-8, 6-0) by a half game.

Dayton and Fordham were tied at 35-35 with five minutes to play in the fourth quarter. A 3-point play by Jayla Scaife at the 4:38 mark gave Dayton the lead and started a 5-0 run.

Fordham tied the game again at 40-40 with 1:09 to play. Scaife again gave Dayton the lead on a jump shot with 52 seconds remaining.

Kyla Whitehead, Jordan Wilmoth and Erin Whalen each made 2 of 2 free throws in the final minute to keep Dayton on top.

Scaife led Dayton with 21 points on 7-of-19 shooting. Whitehead added 13 points. Whitehead and Scaife each had 10 rebounds.

Both teams struggled with shooting. Dayton shot 25 percent from the field. Fordham shot 29 percent. Fordham made 4 of 29 3-pointers. Dayton made 3 of 12.

Dayton outscored Fordham 19-6 at the free-throw line.

Fordham was picked to finish third in the A-10 preseason poll behind VCU and Dayton. Dayton and Fordham meet again at 1 p.m. Feb. 22 in Bronx, N.Y.
