Haring, 27, worked in the same position the last two seasons at Jacksonville State. He was also the director of basketball operations under John Groce at Illinois in the 2016-17 season after serving as a graduate manager for two seasons for the Illini. Dayton assistant coach Darren Hertz was also on Groce’s staff in the 2016-17 season.
“We are excited to add James to our program,” Dayton coach Anthony Grant said in a press release. “He brings a wealth of experience in the operations role from his time at Illinois and most recently, Jacksonville State. He fits will within the makeup of our staff. James is a young man with high character who has a great personality. He is a great addition to our staff and our basketball program.”
Haring attended West Virginia University, where he was a student manager for four years for Bob Huggins’ men’s basketball program and the head senior manager in his final season.

Haring is from New Lenox, Ill., a southwest suburb of Chicago. Dayton did not have a director of basketball operations the last two seasons. Haring fills a spot on Grant’s staff that opened when assistant coach Donnie Jones left to take the head coaching job at Stetson. Hertz moved into Jones’ position after serving as a special assistant to the head coach for two seasons.
As director of basketball operations, Haring will be responsible for “administrative duties of the men's basketball program including team travel and daily scheduling.”
