Dayton opens A-10 women’s basketball tournament play with win over Richmond

Dayton raced out to a double-digit lead early in its Atlantic 10 women’s basketball quarterfinal Friday then held on for a 79-68 win over Richmond.

The top-seeded Flyers led by as many as 21 in the first half but saw the Spiders get within eight with just under three minutes left.

Julia Chandler put back a rare Erin Whalen miss to restore the double-digit lead, and Dayton moved on to face Saint Louis or Massachusetts at 11 a.m. Saturday back at UD Arena.

Whalen made 6 of 7 from 3-point range and led the Flyers with 21 points while Kyla Whitehead added 18 points.

Jayla Scaife and Jenna Giacone added 11 points apiece as the Flyers improved to 23-8.

Jaide Hinds-Clarke led Richmond with 20 points while Kate Klimkiewicz and Angel Burgos each had 13.
