The Dayton Flyers received their first verbal commitment from a member of the 2023 recruiting class on Thursday.

Jaiun Simon, a 6-foot-7 forward from Mableton, Ga., announced his commitment on Instagram 12 days after sitting behind the Dayton bench during the Red & Blue Game at UD Arena.

Dayton assistant coach Darren Hertz gave the first hint of an incoming commitment. Every time, Dayton gets a new recruit, he writes, “It’s a GREAT Day to be a Flyer!!!” on Twitter.

Simon received a scholarship offer from Dayton in August. He’s a senior at Pebblebrook High School. Dayton sophomore forward Kaleb Washington attended the same school before transferring to Wheeler High School, which is 16 miles away, for his senior year in 2020-21.

Three other Atlantic 10 Conference schools were recruiting Simon. Virginia Commonwealth, Loyola and St. Bonaventure offered him scholarships in June.

Dayton left one scholarship open on the 2022-23 roster, so it will have at least one scholarship open for the 2023-24 season.
