Dayton volleyball, men’s soccer suffer close defeats in key matches

A big day for two Dayton Flyers programs ended with disappointing losses for both on Sunday.

The Dayton men’s soccer team, seeded third, lost 1-0 to No. 1 seed Rhode Island in the Atlantic 10 conference tournament championship game at Fordham University in Bronx, N.Y. Rhode Island’s Edvin Akselsen scored in the 51st minute.

Rhode Island (14-3-3) won its second tournament championship in a row and eighth overall. Dayton (13-8) fell short of its first championship since 2015 and fifth overall.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Flyers improve to 3-1

Dayton advanced to the final with a 1-0 victory against Virginia Commonwealth on Friday. Kingsford Adjel scored on a penalty kick in the 31st minute.

On Thursday, three Flyers were honored with A-10 awards. Jonas Fjeldberg was named the conference’s offensive player of the year. Adjel was named midfielder of the year. Toluwalase Oladeinbo was named rookie of the year.

In volleyball, the Flyers fell 3-2 to VCU in their regular-season finale at the Frericks Center. The Rams won 21-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-20, 15-11, clinching the A-10 regular-season title.

Both teams entered the match with 13-0 marks in A-10 play. VCU earned the top seed in the A-10 tournament, which will begin Friday at Rhode Island. Dayton will be the No. 2 seed and will receive a first-round bye and play in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Saturday.
