Dayton women win 16th straight game, clinch outright A-10 title

The University of Dayton women’s basketball team made it 16 in a row Wednesday night.

The Flyers (22-4, 15-0) rallied from a controversial end of the third quarter to score a 71-66 victory over George Mason and clinch the outright regular-season Atlantic 10 title.

Dayton’s Jordan Wilmoth tipped in a missed layup by Lauren Cannatelli just before the horn sounded to end the third to give Dayton a 54-53 lead.

The officials, however, conferred and waved the basket off.

Pressed through the first half of the fourth quarter before finally taking the lead for good on back-to-back 3-pointers by Cannatelli and Jenna Burdette for a 60-56 lead.

Dayton expanded the lead from the foul line despite hitting just 3 of 8 down the stretch.

The 16th straight win puts UD two away from the school record of 18 set by the 1980 national championship team.

The Flyers looked like they were going to have no problems early on.

Cannatelli opened with a hot hand, hitting 4 of 5 from three-point range for 13 of Dayton’s 23 opening quarter points for a 23-17 lead.

Dayton led by as many as 13 in the second quarter, but couldn’t hold on as the Colonials cut the deficit to 34-31 at the half, hitting 5 of 8 free throws in the quarter.

George Mason took the lead late in the third quarter prompting the fourth quarter comeback by the Flyers.

Cannatelli scored 20 points while Jayla Scaife finished with 15 and JaVonna Layfield with 12. Burdette, who was saddled with foul problems most of the final three quarters, added 12 points.
