The NCAA Division I Council voted Wednesday to grant waivers to transfers in all sports to allow them to compete immediately this year.

That means Dayton Flyers guard Elijah Weaver, a 6-foot-6 junior guard, can play this season. The NCAA announced in the fall this season won’t count against athletes’ eligibility, so Weaver would still have two seasons of eligibility remaining after this season.

“The Council continued its trend of voting in favor of maximum flexibility for student-athletes during the pandemic,” said Council chair M. Grace Calhoun, athletics director at Pennsylvania, in a press release. “Allowing transfer student-athletes to compete immediately will provide additional opportunities to student-athletes during this continued difficult time, and perhaps allow games to be played that otherwise might not have been.”

Weaver averaged 5.1 points in 28 games as a freshman at USC and 6.6 points in 30 games last season as a sophomore. He shot 34 percent from 3-point range (48 of 141) over the two seasons.

Dayton (3-1) plays Mississippi at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at UD Arena. Dayton coach Anthony Grant said Monday he would be thrilled if Weaver became eligible and that he would be a good addition.

The change to the transfer rule applies only to this academic year, but the NCAA will consider permanent changes to the rule. Transfers typically have to sit out a year, though many have been granted waivers in recent years. More transfers than ever received waivers this year.
