Tavion Thomas is emerging as one of college football’s great stories this season.

The Dunbar High School graduate leads the Pac 12 in rushing touchdowns and is fifth in the league in rushing yards with 742.

He’s been on a hot streak lately with back-to-back four-touchdown games and a combined 337 yards rushing the past two weeks against UCLA and Stanford.

According to Pro Football Focus, Thomas is third in the country in yards after contact with 132, displaying the size, speed and running ability that earned him dozens of scholarship offers in high school.

He began his career at Cincinnati, where he played 14 games in two seasons, but left the program in 2019.

He spent last season at Independence Community College, but the process of finding another FBS program was complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Deseret News reported last month Thomas found himself homeless at one point but found his way to the Utes program last summer.

“It’s been unbelievable,” he told the paper. “It still feels like a dream. I’m all the way from Ohio. I love it here. Great vibes. I love everything about this place. It’s really beautiful.”

The Utes have won back-to-back games to move to the top of the standings in the Pac-12 South after starting the season 4-3 overall.
