Eric Thames‘ home run dooms Reds in loss to Brewers

The Cincinnati Reds blew a 2-0 lead and then a 4-2 lead and lost 6-4 to the Milwaukee Brewers in the opener of a four-game series Thursday at Great American Ball Park.

Eric Thames hit a three-run home run against reliever Amir Garrett to give the Brewers a 5-4 lead in the seventh. It was the 13th career home run for Thames against the Reds in 20 games.

Two of the runs in the seventh were charged to Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani, who left the game with one out in the seventh and two runners on base. He allowed four runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out six. His ERA stands at 4.45.

The Reds took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Jose Peraza hit a home run to center on the third pitch of the inning. Tucker Barnhart doubled and scored on a two-out double by Eugenio Suarez. It was the 59th RBI of the season for Suarez, who began the day tied for the National League lead.

The Brewers tied the game in the third on a two-run home run with two outs by Jesus Aguilar, but Jesse Winker answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run to give the Reds a 4-2 lead.

The Reds entered the game with 12 victories in their last 15 games. This was the start of a seven-game homestand. The Reds went 6-0 on their last homestand.
