Former Dayton Flyers midfielder Jonas Fjeldberg signed a one-year contract with FC Cincinnati on Thursday, the MLS franchise announced. The deal has an option for three additional years.

“Jonas has earned a contract with FC Cincinnati after training with the team for various weeks now,” FC Cincinnati General Manager Gerard Nijkamp said in a statement. “He has adapted well to the professional setting and we are excited to see his potential with the club.”

According to a report by Laurel Pfahler, of the Queen City Press, Fjeldberg won’t be added to the active roster but will continue training with the team until an international spot opens or a loan to another team is arranged.

FC Cincinnati drafted Fjeldberg, who’s from Norway, with the last pick of the second round (54th overall) in January. He played his senior season at Dayton this year and won the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year Award for the second time, scoring five goals and tallying four assists in nine games. He finished his career with 22 goals and 21 assists.

Fjeldberg was the seventh Flyer to be selected in the MLS Super Draft and the first since 2017.

The others are: Denny Clanton (2004, fourth round, 38th overall, Chicago Fire); Chris Rolfe (2005, third round, 29th overall, Fire); Dasan Robinson (2006, supplemental round, Fire); Isaac Kissi (2010, third round, 42nd overall, Club Deportivo Chivas USA); Amass Amankona (2016, third round, 46th overall); and Lalas Abubakar (2017, first round, fifth overall, Columbus Crew).

FC Cincinnati also posted an interview with Fjeldberg to Twitter on Thursday:

• On the start of his pro career: “I’m very excited. it’s very motivating when you get rewarded for hard work. I’m just ready to get going in Cincinnati jersey.

• On his role with the team: “The coaches put a lot of trust in me and let me play the positions I want to play. Over time I’ve just grown more and more comfortable in the position, and over time I’m hoping to be able to show what I can do with the ball. I can add a lot of flair to the offense a well as work ethic. I’m good on the ball. I’m better on the ball than without the ball. I like to have the ball on my feet. I like to make other players good. I like to give assists. I like to score goals. I just think I can provide a little bit of creativity on the offense.

• On UD: “Dayton is a very professional program. I feel they prepared me the best possible way to take the step over to the professional level.”
