Twice Milton Gage attacked Akron Buchtel’s formidable inside players. No more.

“I went in the paint early a few times and thought, OK, I won’t do that anymore,” said the Chaminade Julienne senior after finishing off Buchtel 60-59 in the 17th annual Premier Health Flyin’ to the Hoop at Trent Arena on Sunday. “I just had to find creative ways to finish around the rim.”

A senior guard, Gage did just that. His two free throws with 4.2 seconds left provided the go-ahead points. His steal following Buchtel’s inbounds clinch the significant win.

CJ (13-1) won its seventh straight and further solidified its lofty spot as the state’s No. 5 D-II team. Larry Turner led the Eagles with 17 points and six rebounds. Gage, who huddled with Capital and Heidelberg coaches afterward, added 14 points and four assists.

“We just wanted to show everybody what Dayton’s about and what Chaminade basketball is about,” Gage said. “That was our mindset.”

Buchtel’s Chris Livingston lived up to his hype of one of the nation’s most sought-after freshmen. The 6-4 guard had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Griffins (6-5). Ohio State is among the many program to have made him an offer.
