Former Alter standout transferring to Ohio State

“I’m very familiar with Braxtin as she went to high school here in Ohio,” Ohio State coach Kevin McGuff said in a team release. “We missed out on a chance to coach her the first time around but I’m extremely excited to welcome her into the program now.

“She can play multiple positions on the perimeter and we’ll use her in a variety of ways. She can shoot the three and can drive and finish around the rim as well. As you saw in her two seasons at Oklahoma State, she’s certainly an exceptional player at the highest level.”

Miller is transferring after two seasons at Oklahoma State. She is likely to have to sit out this season per NCAA transfer rules.

Mikulasikova is a 6-3 forward who averaged 8.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last season for Piestanske Cajky, a club team in the top league in Slovakia.

She has played for PIestanske for three seasons and also played for her national team at European tournaments four times.

“I’m really excited to add Rebeka to the Buckeye family,” McGuff said. “She’s going to provide great depth with our post players and she’s extremely versatile. She is skilled around the basket and she can also play on the perimeter. I think she has a chance to be a special player here.”

Braxtin Miller plans to play for a different OSU next year.

The former Alter High School star, who was part of a record 115 wins, three state championships and four final fours while playing for the Knights, announced Tuesday she plans to transfer to Ohio State after two seasons at Oklahoma State.

A 5-foot-10 guard, Miller was a national top 30 recruit two years ago and logged a pair of productive seasons in Stillwater.

She averaged 14.7 points in 35.0 minutes per game last season at Oklahoma State. She also grabbed 4.2 rebounds and handed out 3.5 assists per game while shooting 32.7 percent from 3-point range.

As a member of the All-Big 12 freshman team a year ago, she averaged 11.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 36.7 percent from 3-point range.

At Alter, Miller was a standout from the start.

She averaged double figures in scoring all four seasons in a Knights uniform, including 16.6 per game as a senior when she was named the Southwest District Player of the Year and made the All-Ohio first team in Division II.

The Associated Press Most Outstanding Player of the 2016 OHSAA Division II final four has two seasons of eligibility left and is likely to have to sit out this season per NCAA rules.

She joins a roster that will be very young but is expected to be very talented.

McGuff, a Hamilton native and Badin grad, signed a top five recruiting class last November that includes three-time Ohio Miss Basketball Kierstan Bell of Canton McKinley and fellow five-star prospects Rikki Harris of Indianapolis North Central, Jacy Sheldon of Dublin (Ohio) Coffman, and Kaelynn Satterfield of Middle Village (N.Y.) Christ The King. McGuff also signed one of the top international prospects in the class in Spanish forward Aixa Wone.

The 2018-19 Buckeyes, McGuff’s sixth Ohio State team, went 14-15 and finished eighth in the Big Ten with a roster that included five graduate transfers and three highly regarded freshmen (Janai Crooms of Cranston, R.I., Aaliyah Patty of Lombard, Ill., and Dorka Juhasz of Hungary).

The 6-4 Juhasz lead Ohio State in scoring (11.7 points per game) and rebounding (9.0) en route to second-team All-Big Ten recognition from the conference coaches.

Crooms started 19 of 29 games and was third on the team in scoring at 8.8 points per game while shooting 46.5 percent from 3-point range (20 for 43), and Patty averaged 6.2 points per game while starting nine of 29 games.

McGuff is 134-65 in six seasons at Ohio State with two Big Ten regular season championships and one tournament title. His Buckeye squads have made five NCAA tournaments and two Sweet 16s.
