Former Dayton Flyers guard signs with Miami Heat

Charles Cooke made his NBA debut a season ago with Pelicans

Former Dayton Flyers guard Charles Cooke signed with the Miami Heat on Sunday.

The Heat announced the signings of Cooke and guard DeAndre Liggins. They waived Marcus Lee and Malik Newman.

Miami has played three of six preseason games and opens the season Oct. 17 in Orlando.

Cooke, a 2017 Dayton graduate who led the Flyers in scoring in 2016-17 and 2015-16, signed a two-way contract with the New Orleans Pelicans last season and appeared in 13 games, becoming the first Dayton player recruited by Archie Miller to play in the NBA. He played a total of 38 minutes and scored six points.

Cooke spent the majority of the season in the NBA G-League and averaged 12.8 points in 25 games. In the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Nev., Cooke played for the Minnesota Timberwolves this year.
